Dr. Mani Vadari – President and Founder

An electricity industry visionary and leader, Dr. Vadari delivers strategic services to a global set of smart grid companies (utilities and vendors) seeking deep subject matter expertise in setting the business, and technical direction to develop the next-generation electric/energy system.  In addition, he is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington and a Technical Consultant to New York State Smart Grid Consortium where he participates in an architecture role in the core REV team.

Dr. Vadari has been delivering solutions focusing on Transmission/Distribution/ generation operations, Energy markets, and Smart Grid for over 25 years. His roles range from Business Architect, and/or Lead solution delivery. A Smart Grid and Smart Cities expert, he offers sought-after perspectives on the entire electric value chain.

A frequent keynoter at industry events in the US and abroad, he also provides advice to several companies and industry groups.  Dr. Vadari’s newest book “Smart Grid Redefined: Transformation of the Electric Utility” has just been released to strong reviews from industry and academia. His last book “Electric System Operations – Evolving to the Modern Grid” is still being used as textbook at several universities and trending to 5 Star reviews on Amazon.  Dr. Vadari has also published over 50 Articles and over 40 blogs in a variety of areas ranging from Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) development to artificial neural networks to electricity utility deregulation and the Smart Grid.

A history of innovation

Prior to founding Modern Grid Solutions, Dr. Vadari was the Vice-President of Energy Infrastructure at Battelle’s Energy Technology Global Business Unit where he led the team developing the industry’s first Active Demand Management product based on the industry’s most innovative transactive control mechanism.  Prior to joining Battelle, Dr. Vadari was one of the lead partners in Accenture’s global T&D team where he founded their System Operations and Smart Grid practice.  Dr. Vadari also previously served as a lead engineer at ESCA (Now GE Digital Grid Solutions), focusing on power system and deregulation applications and their delivery. While at ESCA, Dr. Vadari developed the Transient Stability application and led the industry’s leading DTS product team responsible for development, project support, training, marketing and sales support.

Experience in building successful businesses

 Dr. Vadari’s key focus is on building viable and successful businesses.  At Battelle, Dr. Vadari started the business unit from scratch in 2009 and created a viable and sustainable business for Battelle through a combination of alliances, and multiple ARRA wins.  This effort, anchored by an industry leading  Demand Response product and a marquee client allowed Battelle to offer diverse products/services to marketplace.

Prior to Battelle, Dr. Vadari was a lead partner at Accenture’s global T&D practice focusing on System Operations and Smart Grid.  Dr. Vadari’s efforts established Accenture as a major presence in the Smart Grid by winning several foundational projects in North America, Europe, UK and China.

Dr. Vadari also previously served as a lead engineer at ESCA (Areva T&D), focusing on power system and deregulation applications and their delivery. While at ESCA, in addition to developing the industry’s first operational Transient Stability application, Dr. Vadari also led the DTS product creating a successful business within ESCA.

Achievements and Professional Memberships

Dr. Vadari holds a MS and Ph. D from the University of Washington in Seattle where the work done in his project resulted in a patent (held by BPA and U of W) being awarded for the Adaptive Power Factor Controller.  Dr. Vadari is a senior member of IEEE ( and a recipient of several awards and gold medals early in his career.
